Polar Bear ReproductionMale polar bears are known as boars and females are known as sows. The polar bears only mate for one week in May or April. 1-3 cubs are born in late December or early January. At birth, cubs weigh only 600–700 g (1.3–1.5 lb). Cubs are blind and helpless with a thin layer of fur. They will remain with their mother for at least 2.5 years. Polar bears reproductive rate is one of the slowest of any mammal.
